About the Artwork

This artwork brings together Van's thousand-year-old spirit, geography, and culture in a single fairytale moment. The Van Cat is the narrator and guardian of this tale. It is not just an animal, but the living talisman of these lands. With its two-colored eyes, one reflecting the turquoise of Lake Van and the other the amber of sun-warmed historic stones, it looks at the whole landscape and claims it. It is both the past and future of this geography; with the kitten in its arms, it whispers that this ancient spirit will continue for generations. On the island in the middle of the lake, the Akdamar Church, crafted like stone lace, is the immortality of faith and art reflected in the water. Rising right next to it, the Van Castle is the silent witness of thousands of years of civilizations, the memory of the land. The mosque on the shore symbolizes the cultural richness of this geography and the harmony of differences living together. In the background, the majestic mountain with its snowy peaks is the wise and old grandfather of this dream. The Muradiye waterfall at its foothills shows that life and abundance flow ceaselessly. And embracing all these historical and natural beauties, Lake Van is not just a geographical formation with its waters, but the lifeblood, the blue heart of this city.
